Cable or Dish Network - Which One is the Best?

By Ryan Steele

When you look for a television service provider, you may face the decision of Dish vs cable TV television. Choosing ways to entertain your family on a budget can often be challenging, and you may need to find the best television programming value for your money. If you cannot decide on satellite service or your local cable service, (also known as CATV) here is some information to consider.

CATV

CATV service is usually local and only a phone call away. Not only that, you can get some very convenient and inexpensive features if you bundle services. For example, many CATV services offer digital telephone and high speed Internet service. If you get all three, you may be able to get a special price. It is also convenient to pay for all three with one monthly payment.

You will get a very good selection of channels with a local CATV service. Many of these systems provide news and sports channels for their subscribers only. They also may have a local weather channel. For an additional charge, you can upgrade to digital service.

CATV systems provide a lot of forms of entertainment with pay per view movies and sporting events. You also can receive television shows and movies on demand. On demand means that you can start the show, and stop it, whenever you need to. You can also pay for digital video recorder (DVR) service to record programs for later viewing.

Satellite Television Service

Many satellite television services are dropping their prices to become more competitive. Often times, you can get programming that is similar to CATV for much cheaper prices. You also may be able to have the system installed free of charge. There are usually special offers that can provide services like premium movies and DVR service for no additional charge. However, this usually involves a one year commitment. When it comes to available channels, both CATV and satellite have a lot of selections.

There may be several satellite television providers in your area. When there is a lot of competition, the customers are the ones that benefit, in the form of better service and lower prices. Most likely your CATV company is the only CATV service in the area, and this can be good for the company, and not as good for the customers. Lack of competition may keep prices up and service down.

Satellite television can have problems, in times of rain storms and snow storms. This can sometimes cause a loss of service for a temporary amount of time. If this happens during your favorite shows, it can be very frustrating. CATV service rarely has outages due to weather. However, they can sometimes have trouble with lines that bring the signal to your home.

Summary

If you are in the market for television service, you may need to choose between your local CATV or cable service, and satellite. Satellite is generally cheaper than CATV. Both services offer a wide selection of channels, and you might get a good deal with your CATV services, if you bundle television with telephone and broadband Internet. Satellite television can sometimes lose the signal in bad weather, where CATV usually does not. It is best to take all of these things into consideration, when choosing between dish vs. Cable television.
